All about Pervious Concrete

Pervious concrete, also called Porous Concrete, is made of coarse aggregate, cement, water, additives, after a certain proportion of mixing, then form into a porous lightweight new environmental paving materials.

Pervious concrete is a layer of thin slurry wrapped on the surface by coarse aggregate and bonded to form a honeycomb shape, which can let rainwater flow into the ground and effectively replenish groundwater.

SuccessCrete Pervious Concrete is a special high-performance concrete specially designed for use in the permeable road construction sector. It is a very dependent mixture and should achieve a 15-25% air void structure to flow the water.

It can also effectively eliminate the oil compounds on the ground and other hazards of environmental pollution; It is an excellent permeable floor material to protect nature, maintain ecological balance and alleviate urban heat island effect.

All of the applications are with relatively light and low-frequency loading.

Pervious Concrete makes up for the deficiency of traditional pavement and makes use of its excellent drainage and capacity so that urban rainwater system can be more perfect, to solve the drainage problem.

Where can’t be Pervious Concrete be used?

The heavy driveway is not recommended for Pervious Concrete.

Although the bearing capacity of Pervious Concrete has been appraised by Chinese testing authorities with reaching the strength of C25 and C30, which is far higher than that of ordinary permeable brick, it is still a theoretical possibility. This process requires long-term testing and appraisal to be as perfect as Concrete and Asphalt.

Under “Sponge City Construction” policy, Pervious Concrete is often used in the construction of large parking lots, fire lanes, emergency lanes, and large transportation hubs.

Pervious Concrete Features

1.High permeability: The porosity of Pervious Concrete is about 15% ~ 25%, and the speed can reach 30 ~ 52L/m.h, which is far higher than the discharge rate of the most effective drainage configuration.

  1. High bearing capacity: According to relevant testing and appraisal, the bearing capacity of Pervious Concrete can reach capacity standard of C10 ~ C30 concrete, which is higher than permeable bricks.

  1. Freezing-thawing resistance: Pervious Concrete has a larger porosity, and it equipped with a stronger freezing-thawing resistance than the regular pavements. The freezing-thawing resistance index is 1.01, and surface fracture will not occur under the influence of freezing-thawing.

4, Great decorative effect: Pervious Concrete system has high-quality original color, color additives and color protective sealer. On the basis of retaining the characteristics of Concrete, Pervious Concrete gives it a new connotation, its colors are colorful and diverse, and different colors are used to integrate the architecture and landscape, then create a beautiful and warm living environment.

  1. Economic and durability: The durability and wear resistance of Pervious Concrete is higher than that of Asphalt. Meanwhile, it avoids the weakness of Permeable Brick, like short service life and poor economy.

6.High heat dissipation: Because the low density of Pervious Concrete (15-25% void space) reduces the heat storage capacity, and its unique pore structure makes the lower underground temperature pass into the ground, thus reducing the temperature of the entire pavement. These characteristics make Pervious Concrete system close to the ground covered by natural vegetation in terms of heat absorption and heat storage.

  1. Easy maintenance: The problem of pore blockage that people worry about is not necessary. The unique Pervious Concrete system makes it easy to solve by means of high-pressure washing.

Pervious Concrete vs Concrete

Pervious Concrete also known as Porous Floor, mainly made by aggregate, cement, additives (curing agent, pigment, etc.) and water mix into a kind of Porous Concrete. It doesn’t contain fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate of single grain or intermittent grain is mostly used as the skeleton, and the thick aggregate surface is coated with a thin layer of the cement slurry to bond with each other, forming a honeycomb structure with uniform distribution of holes. Therefore, it is characterized by air permeability, water permeability and lightweight. It has the functions of protecting nature, maintaining ecological balance and alleviating urban heat island effect.

The traditional pavement is mostly paved with asphalt, concrete, stone or cement brick, so it is called hard pavement. Its advantage is neat and durable, the biggest disadvantage is impermeable. But drainage depends on underground sewage pipeline, rainwater is directly treated as sewage when rainfall, it can block the supplement of rainwater to groundwater, which is not conducive to the generation of groundwater. However, Pervious concrete makes up for the deficiency of traditional pavement and makes use of its excellent drainage and pervious capacity, so as to make the urban rainwater system more perfect and solve drainage problems.

How to mix Pervious Concrete

  1. Mixing: The proportion of the aggregate: cement: water: additive in the coloured Pervious Concrete is in accordance with the combination. JS500W mixer is selected and stirred for more than 5 minutes
  2. Pouring: Before pouring, the roadbed should be wet with water, and the Pervious Concrete mixture is relatively hard. The mixtures of Pervious Concrete should be spread with benchmarking.
  3. Tamping: Choose a flat-plate vibrator of light vibration, light vibration can ensure the porosity of the pavement and increase the effectiveness of water permeability.
  4. Levelling: After tamping, use a polishing machine to flatten the permeable road surface to increase its flatness.
  5. Maintenance: After levelling, the surface needs to be covered with plastic film, in order to keep the water does not volatilize. The 2nd day, Pervious Concrete begins to be sprayed with water for curing. During spraying, water is poured from top to bottom through water pipes. Generally, Pervious Concrete is sprayed for curing for 7 days.

Pervious Concrete vs Porous Asphalt

Cold Applied Porous Asphalt, also called the newest type of Colour Asphalt, is a new generation of pavement colour paving system based on reactive inorganic materials modified polymers. Its main components are modified decolourized asphalt synthetic resin, additives, curing agent and so on. It is a low mixing viscosity at room temperature with long service life and moderate curing speed at medium and low temperature. The cured product has high mechanical strength, good adhesion, small shrinkage and great weather resistance. It had not only the rigidity of inorganic materials but also combined with the flexibility of organic materials, which kept synchronous shrinkage with the road surface ability. With not easily cracking, anti-skid wear, environmental protection, Porous Asphalt is the new environmental protection porous colour asphalt pavement.

Advantages of Porous Asphalt

  1. Great anti-skid: Color Permeable Asphalt pavement has good anti-skid performance, which can effectively reduce the braking distance and improve driving safety.
  2. Fast construction cycle: Its construction is fast and efficient, effectively reducing traffic delays caused by construction.
  3. Good noise reduction effect: the fine aggregate structure of Color Permeable Asphalt has the effect of conducting audio frequency, which can reduce the noise of 3~4 dB when used in cement pavement.
  4. Good visual sense: different colour road surface effectively enhances the road colour brightness, greatly improves the road surface perception effect.

Pervious Concrete vs Resin Bound Stone

  1. Production process

Resin Bound Stone is made of coloured stone by specially modified resin adhesive, generally speaking, its main raw materials are adhesive and stone.

Pervious Concrete is a kind of Permeable lightweight concrete made of aggregate, cement, additives and water. Unlike traditional cement, it has no sediment, but a lot of additives.

  1. Application field

Resin Bound Stone is mainly used for some decorative ground, generally used for the ground with low load requirements.

Pervious Concrete is mainly used for lightweight traffic roads such as people and vehicles. Because its bearing capacity is close to the Strength of C25 concrete, it is often used for sidewalks, bicycle paths, open parking lots and so on.

  1. Cost

Resin Bound Stone is strict to the quality, shape, size and colour of the stone. In addition, it does not contain cement or other additives, so it is very expensive. It looks beautiful generous, but not durable and poor water permeability.

The cost of Pervious Concrete is a little more expensive than the traditional concrete pavement, but it is much cheaper than Resin Bound Stone, which is the most cost-effective among various types of permeable pavement.

Conclusion

Pervious Concrete can solve the problem of water accumulation on the road surface, improve the safety and comfort of people and vehicles, and improve the traffic conditions and people’s living environment.

Pervious Concrete can allow rainwater to flow into the ground, and effectively replenish groundwater, alleviate some urban environmental problems, such as the sharp decline of the city’s underground water level, effectively eliminate the harm of oil compounds on the surface to environmental pollution. At the same time,it can protect groundwater, maintain ecological balance, and alleviate the urban heat island effect. It is of special significance for the benign development of the human living environment, urban rainwater management and water pollution prevention and control.

Pervious Concrete has a series of colour formula, with the creative design, according to the different environment and personality requirements of the decorative style of laying construction. This is the traditional pavement and generally, permeable brick can not achieve the special pavement material.
